Case Management at Jessie’s House
Every family that arrives at Jessie’s House is assigned a case manager. The case manager works with the family to develop and implement a plan of action that will help them achieve important objectives, including education and employment goals and, of course, moving into permanent housing. Physical and mental health issues for all family members are addressed. Referrals are made to agencies that provide literacy and job training support. Childcare plans are put in place for parents who either are working when they arrive at Jessie’s House or who find employment while staying at the shelter. Case managers also work with families to assure that they receive appropriate state aid from programs such as Mass Health, food stamps, and TAFDC.
The search for permanent housing for Jessie’s House residents is handled by the New England Farm Workers’ Council.
Jessie’s House Outreach Program
Making the move from a shelter into permanent housing presents challenges for many families. The staff at Jessie’s House continues to maintain contact to assure that the hard-earned lessons learned while in shelter continue to be put to use by families once they relocate into a home of their own.
Like many of us today, these families struggle with balancing their budgets and with making sure there is enough money to pay for the essentials. Jessie’s House helps out with gift cards to supermarkets, drug stores and other retailers that help parents stretch their budgets. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, we pass along turkeys and other food items that are donated to the shelter. Referrals to other social service agencies continue to be made, as needed. Finally, families benefit just from knowing that our staff members continue to be concerned for their welfare and are there to listen when challenges crop up.
